We all knew the end of the world was coming at the hands at the hands of our computers. It’s pretty much a given at this point. It really shouldn’t come as a shock to you that’s how we’re going out – we’ve been giving ourselves warnings for decades. From Doctor Strangelove to to Battlestar Galactica to Terminator to The Matrix, we’ve been keenly aware that a cybernetic revolt wasn’t a matter of if but rather a matter of when.
Well, that when is now.
That’s the breaks you get in Resistor, the inaugural two player card game of thermonuclear destruction by Cardboard Fortress and henceforth picked up by Level 99 Games. In this bleak landscape of circuitry gone horribly awry, humans decided it was wise to put all of their radioactive eggs in one basket by handing over control of their nuclear arsenals to one of two supercomputers: Deep Red and BLU9000. However, each computer independently determined that the best course of survival was to hack into and destroy its counterpart.
Such as decision is the product of cold, lifeless logic. Unfortunately, every time it comes down to that, humans are generally seen more as a threat to the situation than the savior of it. If only we knew why that was…
Utilizing double-sided cards and a compulsory need to destroy your opponent with extreme prejudice, this quick strategic card game uses one part tactics and one part memorization. Resistor has fairly simple rules, with turns consisting of the same three actions that you must take, but the order that you choose to do them in very well could spell the difference between victory or annihilation.
Plus, we’re pretty sure no matter who wins, humanity is going to lose.
As entertaining as this game is, though, we also know Resistor’s creation heralds yet another end of the world scenario to face down. We humans have put up a heck of a fight against a lot of technological foes, from sentient machines to our own hubris. This time, we may have flown too close to the sun for the final time.
Like we said, the odds were stacked against us. But honestly, we’re a little surprised it took this long.
Since Resistor may take us to midnight on the Doomsday Clock, we figured we could have a little fun looking back on all the different ways us humans have faced down oblivion due to various metal and silicon creations. It’s something we’ve written about a lot, actually. It’s almost as if we were trying to tell ourselves something, but we didn’t realize it until too late.
In case we’re wrong, however, and this all just proves to be another test, we’ve taken out an insurance policy.
